Full Waveform Acoustic Data Processing

Full Waveform Acoustic Data Processing
By:Jean-Luc Mari,Francoise Coppens,Philippe Gavin
Published on 1994 by Editions TECHNIP

This book is an initiation to the use of the acoustic method for characterizing formations. The use of acoustic well logging to determine the velocity of compressional waves in formations is common practice and dates back a long time (1952). Full waveform acoustic data acquisition enables loggers to apply signal processing techniques to acoustic data. Such techniques are similar to the ones used in seismic processing. The information obtained by acoustic data processing can be used for a more thorough characterization of formations. The present book is made up of four parts, each describing a specific application of signal processing used for acoustic data.

Underwater Acoustic Data Processing

Underwater Acoustic Data Processing
By:Y. T. Chan
Published on 1989-03-31 by Springer Science & Business Media

This book contains the papers that were accepted for presentation at the 1988 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Underwater Acoustic Data Processing, held at the Royal Military College of Canada from 18 to 29 July, 1988. Approximately 110 participants from various NATO countries were in attendance during this two week period. Their research interests range from underwater acoustics to signal processing and computer science; some are renowned scientists and some are recent Ph.D. graduates. The purpose of the ASI was to provide an authoritative summing up of the various research activities related to sonar technology. The exposition on each subject began with one or two tutorials prepared by invited lecturers, followed by research papers which provided indications of the state of development in that specific area. I have broadly classified the papers into three sections under the titles of I. Propagation and Noise, II. Signal Processing and III. Post Processing. The reader will find in Section I papers on low frequency acoustic sources and effects of the medium on underwater acoustic propagation. Problems such as coherence loss due to boundary interaction, wavefront distortion and multipath transmission were addressed. Besides the medium, corrupting noise sources also have a strong influence on the performance of a sonar system and several researchers described methods of modeling these sources.

Monitoring the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty: Data Processing and Infrasound

Monitoring the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty: Data Processing and Infrasound
By:Zoltan A. Der,Robert H. Shumway,Eugene T. Herrin
Published on 2012-12-06 by Springer

On September 10, 1996, The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Copmprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), prohibiting nuclear explosions worldwide, in all environments. The treaty calls for a global verification system, including a network of 321 monitoring stations distributed around the globe, a data communications network, an international data center (IDC), and on-site inspections, to verify compliance. This volume presents certain recent research results pertaining on methods used to process data recorded by instruments of the International Monitoring System (IMS) and addressing recording infrasound signals generated by atmospheric explosions. Six papers treating data processing provide an important selection of topics expected to contribute to improving our ability to successfully monitor a CTBT. Five papers concerning infrasound include descriptions of ways in which that important research area can contribute to CTBT monitoring, the automatic processing of infrasound data, and site conditions that serve to improve the quality of infrasound data.

Computational Neural Networks for Geophysical Data Processing

Computational Neural Networks for Geophysical Data Processing
By:M.M. Poulton
Published on 2001-06-13 by Elsevier

This book was primarily written for an audience that has heard about neural networks or has had some experience with the algorithms, but would like to gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental material. For those that already have a solid grasp of how to create a neural network application, this work can provide a wide range of examples of nuances in network design, data set design, testing strategy, and error analysis. Computational, rather than artificial, modifiers are used for neural networks in this book to make a distinction between networks that are implemented in hardware and those that are implemented in software. The term artificial neural network covers any implementation that is inorganic and is the most general term. Computational neural networks are only implemented in software but represent the vast majority of applications. While this book cannot provide a blue print for every conceivable geophysics application, it does outline a basic approach that has been used successfully.

Emerging Devices for Low-Power and High-Performance Nanosystems

Emerging Devices for Low-Power and High-Performance Nanosystems
By:Simon Deleonibus
Published on 2018-12-13 by CRC Press

The history of information and communications technologies (ICT) has been paved by both evolutive paths and challenging alternatives, so-called emerging devices and architectures. Their introduction poses the issues of state variable definition, information processing, and process integration in 2D, above IC, and in 3D. This book reviews the capabilities of integrated nanosystems to match low power and high performance either by hybrid and heterogeneous CMOS in 2D/3D or by emerging devices for alternative sensing, actuating, data storage, and processing. The choice of future ICTs will need to take into account not only their energy efficiency but also their sustainability in the global ecosystem.

Signal Processing for Neuroscientists

Signal Processing for Neuroscientists
By:Wim van Drongelen
Published on 2006-12-18 by Elsevier

Signal Processing for Neuroscientists introduces analysis techniques primarily aimed at neuroscientists and biomedical engineering students with a reasonable but modest background in mathematics, physics, and computer programming. The focus of this text is on what can be considered the ‘golden trio’ in the signal processing field: averaging, Fourier analysis, and filtering. Techniques such as convolution, correlation, coherence, and wavelet analysis are considered in the context of time and frequency domain analysis. The whole spectrum of signal analysis is covered, ranging from data acquisition to data processing; and from the mathematical background of the analysis to the practical application of processing algorithms. Overall, the approach to the mathematics is informal with a focus on basic understanding of the methods and their interrelationships rather than detailed proofs or derivations. One of the principle goals is to provide the reader with the background required to understand the principles of commercially available analyses software, and to allow him/her to construct his/her own analysis tools in an environment such as MATLAB®. Multiple color illustrations are integrated in the text Includes an introduction to biomedical signals, noise characteristics, and recording techniques Basics and background for more advanced topics can be found in extensive notes and appendices A Companion Website hosts the MATLAB scripts and several data files: http://www.elsevierdirect.com/companion.jsp?ISBN=9780123708670

Data Analysis and Signal Processing in Chromatography

Data Analysis and Signal Processing in Chromatography
By:A. Felinger
Published on 1998-05-19 by Elsevier

This book gives an overview of the numerical data analysis and signal treatment techniques that are used in chromatography and related separation techniques. Emphasis is given to the description of the symmetrical and asymmetrical chromatographic peak shape models. Both theoretical and empirical models are discussed. The fundamentals of data acquisition, types and effect of baseline noise, and methods of improving the signal-to-noise ratio (either in time or in frequency and wavelet domain) are thoroughly discussed. Resolution enhancement techniques, such as curve fitting, deconvolution by Fourier and wavelet transforms, iterative deconvolution, Kalman filtering and multivariate methods of curve resolution are all discussed with several chromatographic examples. Quantitative analysis by peak area of peak height measurement, the precision and accuracy of the quantitation of stand-alone or overlapping and symmetrical or asymmetrical peaks are treated. In a separate chapter, guidelines are given for the use of transform techniques for the analysis of chromatograms. A statistical description of peak overlap is given in the final chapters. Since the concept of resolution has to be reconsidered when one separates complex mixtures, the problem of resolution and overlap is quantitatively discussed by means of statistical methods, and by using Fourier analysis of the complex chromatogram. Features of this book • The ultimate source of numerical techniques to enhance chromatographic data • Gives a detailed description of signal and resolution enhancement techniques in a manner applicable for enhancing not only chromatography, but also spectroscopic and other analytical signals • The first book with a thorough overview of the statistics of peak overlap. This is the first volume to encompass both the simple and more sophisticated methods for the numerical treatment of chromatograms. It is, therefore, the fundamental resource of numerical analysis methods for every analyst.

By:Jochen Aberle,Colin Rennie,David Admiraal,Marian Muste
Published on 2017-07-20 by CRC Press

This is the second volume of a two-volume guide to designing, conducting and interpreting laboratory and field experiments in a broad range of topics associated with hydraulic engineering. Specific guidance is provided on methods and instruments currently used in experimental hydraulics, with emphasis on new and emerging measurement technologies and methods of analysis. Additionally, this book offers a concise outline of essential background theory, underscoring the intrinsic connection between theory and experiments. This book is much needed, as experimental hydraulicians have had to refer to guidance scattered in scientific papers or specialized monographs on essential aspects of laboratory and fieldwork practice. The book is the result of the first substantial effort in the community of hydraulic engineering to describe in one place all the components of experimental hydraulics. Included is the work of a team of more than 45 professional experimentalists, who explore innovative approaches to the vast array of experiments of differing complexity encountered by today’s hydraulic engineer, from laboratory to field, from simple but well-conceived to complex and well-instrumented. The style of this book is intentionally succinct, making frequent use of convenient summaries, tables and examples to present information. All researchers, practitioners, and students conducting or evaluating experiments in hydraulics will find this book useful.

NMR Data Processing

NMR Data Processing
By:Jeffrey C. Hoch,Alan Stern
Published on 1996-10-05 by Wiley-Liss

NMR DATA PROCESSING Jeffrey C. Hoch and Alan S. Stern Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful nondestructive technique for exploring the structure of matter. In recent years, NMR instrumentation has become increasingly sophisticated, and the software used to acquire and process NMR data continues to expand in scope and complexity. This software has always been difficult to understand, and, until now, it seemed likely to remain that way. NMR Data Processing examines and explains the techniques used to process, present, and analyze NMR data. It provides a complete account of the fundamentals of spectrum analysis and establishes a framework for applying those fundamentals to real NMR data. It also details, in clear and concise language, the basic principles underlying the complex software needed to analyze the data. Two chapters are devoted to the fundamentals and applications of discrete Fourier transform (DFT) in NMR, which was crucial to the development of modern NMR spectroscopy. A large part of the book focuses on increasingly important non-DFT methods, which obtain higher sensitivity and resolution. Other topics covered include: * Data formats * Processing for multidimensional experiments * Parametric modeling of NMR signals * Standard techniques-apodization, zero-filling, the Hilbert transform * Artifacts-aliasing, leakage, solvent signals * Advanced processing techniques-LP, MaxEnt, Bayesian analysis Jeffrey C. Hoch and Alan S. Stern conclude their in-depth look at this rapidly growing field by exploring methods for analyzing processed data, including visualization, quantification, and error analysis. Readers are provided with a solid foundation for developing new methods of their own. NMR Data Processing is an important tool for students learning basic principles for the first time, technicians troubleshooting data processing problems, and professional researchers developing new techniques. It will help all NMR users acquire a true grasp of the methods behind the process, avoid the pitfalls of misapplication and misinterpretation, and exploit the full power of NMR software.
