Office Automation

Office Automation
By:D. Tsichritzis
Published on 2012-12-06 by Springer Science & Business Media

The term |Office Automation| implies much and means little. The word |Office| is usually reserved for units in an organization that have a rather general function. They are supposed to support different activities, but it is notoriously difficult to determine what an office is supposed to do. Automation in this loose context may mean many different things. At one extreme, it is nothing more than giving people better tools than typewriters and telephones with which to do their work more efficiently and effectively. At the opposite extreme, it implies the replacement of people by machines which perform office procedures automatically. In this book we will take the approach that |Office Automation| is much more than just better tools, but falls significantly short of replacing every person in an office. It may reduce the need for clerks, it may take over some secretarial functions, and it may lessen the dependence of principals on support personnel. Office Automation will change the office environment. It will eliminate the more mundane and well understood functions and will highlight the decision-oriented activities in an office. The goal of this book is to provide some understanding of office . activities and to evaluate the potential of Office Information Systems for office procedure automation. To achieve this goal, we need to explore concepts, elaborate on techniques, and outline tools.

Real-Time Digital Signal Processing

Real-Time Digital Signal Processing
By:Nasser Kehtarnavaz
Published on 2011-03-15 by Elsevier

Digital Signal Processing has undergone enormous growth in usage/implementation in the last 20 years and many engineering schools are now offering real-time DSP courses in their undergraduate curricula. Our everyday lives involve the use of DSP systems in things such as cell phones and high-speed modems; Texas Instruments has introduced the TMS320C6000 DSP processor family to meet the high performance demands of today’s signal processing applications. This book provides the know-how for the implementation and optimization of computationally intensive signal processing algorithms on the Texas Instruments family of TMS320C6000 DSP processors. It is organized in such a way that it can be used as the textbook for DSP lab courses offered at many engineering schools or as a self-study/reference for those familiar with DSP but not this family of processors. This book provides a restructured, modified, and condensed version of the information in more than twenty TI manuals so that one can learn real-time DSP implementations on the C6000 family in a structured course, within one semester. Each chapter is followed by an appropriate lab exercise to provide the hands-on lab material for implementing appropriate signal processing functions. Cooperative Agents

Cooperative Agents
By:N.J. Saam,B. Schmidt
Published on 2002-01-31 by Springer Science & Business Media

Agent-based modelling on a computer appears to have a special role to play in the development of social science. It offers a means of discovering general and applicable social theory, and grounding it in precise assumptions and derivations, whilst addressing those elements of individual cognition that are central to human society. However, there are important questions to be asked and difficulties to overcome in achieving this potential. What differentiates agent-based modelling from traditional computer modelling? Which model types should be used under which circumstances? If it is appropriate to use a complex model, how can it be validated? Is social simulation research to adopt a realist epistemology, or can it operate within a social constructionist framework? What are the sociological concepts of norms and norm processing that could either be used for planned implementation or for identifying equivalents of social norms among co-operative agents? Can sustainability be achieved more easily in a hierarchical agent society than in a society of isolated agents? What examples are there of hybrid forms of interaction between humans and artificial agents? These are some of the sociological questions that are addressed.

Medical and Biological Image Analysis

Medical and Biological Image Analysis
By:
Published on 2018-07-04 by BoD – Books on Demand

This book deals with medical image analysis methods. In particular, it contains two significant chapters on image segmentation as well as some selected examples of the application of image analysis and processing methods. Despite the significant development of information technology methods used in modern image analysis and processing algorithms, the segmentation process remains open. This is mainly due to intra-patient variability and/or scene diversity. Segmentation is equally difficult in the case of ultrasound imaging and depends on the location of the probe or the contact force. Regardless of the imaging method, segmentation must be tailored for a specific application in almost every case. These types of application areas for various imaging methods are included in this book.

Data Analysis and Signal Processing in Chromatography

Data Analysis and Signal Processing in Chromatography
By:A. Felinger
Published on 1998-05-19 by Elsevier

This book gives an overview of the numerical data analysis and signal treatment techniques that are used in chromatography and related separation techniques. Emphasis is given to the description of the symmetrical and asymmetrical chromatographic peak shape models. Both theoretical and empirical models are discussed. The fundamentals of data acquisition, types and effect of baseline noise, and methods of improving the signal-to-noise ratio (either in time or in frequency and wavelet domain) are thoroughly discussed. Resolution enhancement techniques, such as curve fitting, deconvolution by Fourier and wavelet transforms, iterative deconvolution, Kalman filtering and multivariate methods of curve resolution are all discussed with several chromatographic examples. Quantitative analysis by peak area of peak height measurement, the precision and accuracy of the quantitation of stand-alone or overlapping and symmetrical or asymmetrical peaks are treated. In a separate chapter, guidelines are given for the use of transform techniques for the analysis of chromatograms. A statistical description of peak overlap is given in the final chapters. Since the concept of resolution has to be reconsidered when one separates complex mixtures, the problem of resolution and overlap is quantitatively discussed by means of statistical methods, and by using Fourier analysis of the complex chromatogram. Features of this book • The ultimate source of numerical techniques to enhance chromatographic data • Gives a detailed description of signal and resolution enhancement techniques in a manner applicable for enhancing not only chromatography, but also spectroscopic and other analytical signals • The first book with a thorough overview of the statistics of peak overlap. This is the first volume to encompass both the simple and more sophisticated methods for the numerical treatment of chromatograms. It is, therefore, the fundamental resource of numerical analysis methods for every analyst.

Experimental Hydraulics: Methods, Instrumentation, Data Processing and Management

Experimental Hydraulics: Methods, Instrumentation, Data Processing and Management
By:Jochen Aberle,Colin Rennie,David Admiraal,Marian Muste
Published on 2017-07-20 by CRC Press

This is the second volume of a two-volume guide to designing, conducting and interpreting laboratory and field experiments in a broad range of topics associated with hydraulic engineering. Specific guidance is provided on methods and instruments currently used in experimental hydraulics, with emphasis on new and emerging measurement technologies and methods of analysis. Additionally, this book offers a concise outline of essential background theory, underscoring the intrinsic connection between theory and experiments. This book is much needed, as experimental hydraulicians have had to refer to guidance scattered in scientific papers or specialized monographs on essential aspects of laboratory and fieldwork practice. The book is the result of the first substantial effort in the community of hydraulic engineering to describe in one place all the components of experimental hydraulics. Included is the work of a team of more than 45 professional experimentalists, who explore innovative approaches to the vast array of experiments of differing complexity encountered by today’s hydraulic engineer, from laboratory to field, from simple but well-conceived to complex and well-instrumented. The style of this book is intentionally succinct, making frequent use of convenient summaries, tables and examples to present information. All researchers, practitioners, and students conducting or evaluating experiments in hydraulics will find this book useful.

NMR Data Processing

NMR Data Processing
By:Jeffrey C. Hoch,Alan Stern
Published on 1996-10-05 by Wiley-Liss

NMR DATA PROCESSING Jeffrey C. Hoch and Alan S. Stern Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful nondestructive technique for exploring the structure of matter. In recent years, NMR instrumentation has become increasingly sophisticated, and the software used to acquire and process NMR data continues to expand in scope and complexity. This software has always been difficult to understand, and, until now, it seemed likely to remain that way. NMR Data Processing examines and explains the techniques used to process, present, and analyze NMR data. It provides a complete account of the fundamentals of spectrum analysis and establishes a framework for applying those fundamentals to real NMR data. It also details, in clear and concise language, the basic principles underlying the complex software needed to analyze the data. Two chapters are devoted to the fundamentals and applications of discrete Fourier transform (DFT) in NMR, which was crucial to the development of modern NMR spectroscopy. A large part of the book focuses on increasingly important non-DFT methods, which obtain higher sensitivity and resolution. Other topics covered include: * Data formats * Processing for multidimensional experiments * Parametric modeling of NMR signals * Standard techniques-apodization, zero-filling, the Hilbert transform * Artifacts-aliasing, leakage, solvent signals * Advanced processing techniques-LP, MaxEnt, Bayesian analysis Jeffrey C. Hoch and Alan S. Stern conclude their in-depth look at this rapidly growing field by exploring methods for analyzing processed data, including visualization, quantification, and error analysis. Readers are provided with a solid foundation for developing new methods of their own. NMR Data Processing is an important tool for students learning basic principles for the first time, technicians troubleshooting data processing problems, and professional researchers developing new techniques. It will help all NMR users acquire a true grasp of the methods behind the process, avoid the pitfalls of misapplication and misinterpretation, and exploit the full power of NMR software.

By:Mamta Mittal,Valentina E. Balas,Lalit Mohan Goyal,Raghvendra Kumar
Published on 2018-06-16 by Springer

The book describes the emergence of big data technologies and the role of Spark in the entire big data stack. It compares Spark and Hadoop and identifies the shortcomings of Hadoop that have been overcome by Spark. The book mainly focuses on the in-depth architecture of Spark and our understanding of Spark RDDs and how RDD complements big data’s immutable nature, and solves it with lazy evaluation, cacheable and type inference. It also addresses advanced topics in Spark, starting with the basics of Scala and the core Spark framework, and exploring Spark data frames, machine learning using Mllib, graph analytics using Graph X and real-time processing with Apache Kafka, AWS Kenisis, and Azure Event Hub. It then goes on to investigate Spark using PySpark and R. Focusing on the current big data stack, the book examines the interaction with current big data tools, with Spark being the core processing layer for all types of data. The book is intended for data engineers and scientists working on massive datasets and big data technologies in the cloud. In addition to industry professionals, it is helpful for aspiring data processing professionals and students working in big data processing and cloud computing environments.

Data Processing and Reconciliation for Chemical Process Operations

Data Processing and Reconciliation for Chemical Process Operations
By:José A. Romagnoli,Mabel Cristina Sanchez
Published on 1999-10-25 by Elsevier

Computer techniques have made online measurements available at every sampling period in a chemical process. However, measurement errors are introduced that require suitable techniques for data reconciliation and improvements in accuracy. Reconciliation of process data and reliable monitoring are essential to decisions about possible system modifications (optimization and control procedures), analysis of equipment performance, design of the monitoring system itself, and general management planning. While the reconciliation of the process data has been studied for more than 20 years, there is no single source providing a unified approach to the area with instructions on implementation. Data Processing and Reconciliation for Chemical Process Operations is that source. Competitiveness on the world market as well as increasingly stringent environmental and product safety regulations have increased the need for the chemical industry to introduce such fast and low cost improvements in process operations. Introduces the first unified approach to this important field Bridges theory and practice through numerous worked examples and industrial case studies Provides a highly readable account of all aspects of data classification and reconciliation Presents the reader with material, problems, and directions for further study

Propagation of Interval and Probabilistic Uncertainty in Cyberinfrastructure-related Data Processing and Data Fusion

Propagation of Interval and Probabilistic Uncertainty in Cyberinfrastructure-related Data Processing and Data Fusion
By:Christian Servin,Vladik Kreinovich
Published on 2014-11-20 by Springer

On various examples ranging from geosciences to environmental sciences, this book explains how to generate an adequate description of uncertainty, how to justify semiheuristic algorithms for processing uncertainty, and how to make these algorithms more computationally efficient. It explains in what sense the existing approach to uncertainty as a combination of random and systematic components is only an approximation, presents a more adequate three-component model with an additional periodic error component, and explains how uncertainty propagation techniques can be extended to this model. The book provides a justification for a practically efficient heuristic technique (based on fuzzy decision-making). It explains how the computational complexity of uncertainty processing can be reduced. The book also shows how to take into account that in real life, the information about uncertainty is often only partially known, and, on several practical examples, explains how to extract the missing information about uncertainty from the available data.
